The roof of Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro, is based in the North of Tanzania. Mount Kilimanjaro is both Africa’s highest mountain and the world’s tallest free standing peak. Standing at 5,895 meters above the sea level , Mount Kilimanjaro is also unique at it is located just 330km from the equator.
Mount Kilimanjaro consists of three volcanic summits. Shira (3,962m), the oldest of the three summits, is already extinct. Mawenzi (5,149m) and the youngest volcanic summit is Kibo (5,895m) are dormant and could erupt again.
There are seven established routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro ,Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira, Rongai, Northen Circuit and Umbwe. The Marangu, Machame, and Umbwe routes are all approach from the south of the mountain(Mweka is used only for descent). The Lemosho, Shira and Northern Circuit routes approach from the west. The Rongai approaches from the north.
